2016 was a big year for the Barega Saxophone Quartet! We were excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with the Hourglass Ensemble from Sydney and present two feature performances in Brisbane and Sydney titled Journey to the Underworld. This actually meant we had our Sydney Opera House debut on July 31 with a performance in the Utzon Room to an appreciative and energetic audience.
Our visit to Sydney also included a marathon recording session at Trackdown Studios where we laid down some of the fantastic charts from this program (to be heard by your ears very soon!).
We then had the pleasure of returning to our alma mater – the Queensland Conservatorium of Music – on October 7 for Revolution, a collection of the most innovative and celebrated of contemporary repertoire for saxophone quartet. This was a wonderful celebration of music and a pleasure to be performing at the University where we founded the group nine years earlier. And to round out a busy year, on December 10 we were privileged to perform with the Queensland Wind Orchestra where we presented David Maslanka’s extraordinary Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Wind Ensemble.
